What are HCPCS codes for NEMT?

HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System) codes are the standardized service codes used on medical claims. Non-emergency transportation uses the A0xxx series: A0100 for taxi, A0110 for bus, A0120 for mini-bus or van, A0130 for wheelchair van, A0140 for air, A0170 for parking and tolls, A0180 to A0210 for lodging and meals, A0425 for ground mileage, and A0426 and A0428 for basic life support (stretcher) transport. States and brokers may add local modifiers or their own code sets.

Why HCPCS codes matter for NEMT

Billing the wrong code is a denial or, worse, an overpayment you have to return in an audit. A wheelchair trip billed as A0130 pays more than an ambulatory trip billed as A0120, so the level of service on the claim must match what was authorized and what actually happened. Your dispatch and billing software should map each trip's level of service to the payer's code automatically.
