What is a medical courier?

A medical courier transports non-passenger medical items: lab specimens, blood products, prescriptions, medical records and durable equipment, between labs, clinics, pharmacies, hospitals and patients' homes. Work is typically scheduled routes plus on-demand runs, and it requires chain-of-custody documentation, temperature control for some items, and HIPAA-compliant handling.

Why medical courier work matters for NEMT

Courier work uses the same vehicles, drivers and dispatch capability as NEMT and fills the gaps between rider trips, especially mid-day and evenings. Labs and pharmacies pay on contract and the work is less regulated than passenger transport. The caution is scope: mixing riders and specimens in the same vehicle at the same time is generally prohibited by contracts, so dispatch must keep the two streams separate.
