What is long-distance medical transport?

Long-distance medical transport is non-emergency transportation over distances that exceed a normal local trip, typically more than 100 miles and sometimes across state lines, for riders who cannot travel by ordinary means. Common cases include transfers to specialty hospitals, moves to be near family, and returning home after treatment away. The service can be ambulatory, wheelchair or stretcher, and is usually paid privately or by the referring facility, though Medicaid covers some out-of-area specialist trips.

Why long-distance transport matters for NEMT

Long-distance trips are high-ticket, often four figures, and reward providers with comfortable vehicles, two-driver crews and strong pre-trip planning. They also carry specific requirements: interstate operating authority questions, insurance that covers the route, rest rules for drivers and contingency plans for medical needs en route. Providers usually add this line after establishing a local base rather than starting with it.
