What is a same-day trip?

A same-day trip is one requested with less than 24 hours' notice, outside the standard advance-booking rule that most Medicaid programs set at two to three business days. Same-day requests come from hospital discharges, urgent care visits, dialysis reschedules and broker reassignments when another provider fails. Brokers often route them by calling providers until one accepts.

Why same-day trips matter for NEMT

Same-day trips are disruptive but strategic. Accepting them reliably makes you the broker's first call, which leads to better standing-order assignments. The rule is to price and staff for them deliberately: a floater vehicle during discharge hours, a dispatcher empowered to say yes or no in under a minute, and a rate that reflects the deadhead. Providers that accept every same-day trip without capacity end up late on the trips that were already scheduled.
