What is bariatric transport?

Bariatric transport serves riders whose weight exceeds the rating of standard equipment, typically above 350 to 400 pounds. It requires wheelchairs, lifts, ramps, securement systems or stretchers rated for 600 to 1,000 pounds, wider vehicle doors, and often a second attendant for safe loading. Payers usually authorize bariatric service as a distinct level of service with a higher rate.

Why bariatric transport matters for NEMT

Bariatric demand is growing and under-served in most markets, which makes it a defensible niche. The investment is specific equipment, staff training to prevent injuries to riders and crew, and a dispatch process that flags bariatric trips so the right vehicle is sent every time. Sending an under-rated lift to a bariatric pickup is a safety incident and a liability claim waiting to happen.
