What is wheelchair transport?
Wheelchair transport is non-emergency medical transportation for riders who remain in their wheelchair or scooter for the ride. It requires a wheelchair-accessible vehicle with a lift or ramp, a four-point tie-down and occupant restraint system, and a driver trained in securement and in assisting riders on and off the vehicle. Payers reimburse wheelchair trips at a higher base rate than ambulatory.
Why wheelchair transport matters for NEMT
Wheelchair service is the natural second step for a growing NEMT company. Demand is steady from dialysis, nursing homes and rehab, competition from ride-hailing is minimal, and rates are meaningfully higher. The costs are real: a new accessible van runs well into five figures, securement training is mandatory, and loading adds 5 to 10 minutes per stop.
