What is wheelchair transport?

Wheelchair transport is non-emergency medical transportation for riders who remain in their wheelchair or scooter for the ride. It requires a wheelchair-accessible vehicle with a lift or ramp, a four-point tie-down and occupant restraint system, and a driver trained in securement and in assisting riders on and off the vehicle. Payers reimburse wheelchair trips at a higher base rate than ambulatory.
