Acute healthcare is short-term treatment for a severe illness, injury or urgent condition, delivered in emergency departments, hospitals, urgent care centers and outpatient surgery centers. It is distinguished from chronic or long-term care by its intensity and short duration. Acute episodes generate unplanned transportation: trips to urgent care, discharges home or to a skilled nursing facility, and follow-up visits in the days after.
Acute care facilities are a steady source of same-day and discharge trips, often at wheelchair or stretcher level, and hospitals increasingly contract directly with NEMT providers to clear beds faster. Winning that work requires reliable same-day capacity, professional crews and a fast response to discharge planners. The trips are less predictable than dialysis standing orders but pay better and open relationships with case managers who control referrals.
