Behavioral health transport is NEMT to and from mental health and substance use treatment: outpatient therapy, psychiatric appointments, partial hospitalization programs and opioid treatment programs where patients receive daily methadone or buprenorphine dosing. Many of these trips are Medicaid-covered and recurring, and some states run dedicated behavioral health transportation contracts.

Why behavioral health transport matters for NEMT

Daily dosing trips are high-frequency standing orders, often early morning, and they are under-served because some providers avoid the population. The service requires strict confidentiality (the destination itself is sensitive PHI), drivers trained in de-escalation and dignity, and dispatch policies that never announce the destination in a multi-loaded vehicle. Providers who serve this segment well earn loyal volume and referrals from treatment programs.
