What is an NPI?

The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique 10-digit number issued by CMS through the NPPES registry to healthcare providers and organizations. NEMT companies obtain a Type 2 (organization) NPI under taxonomy codes for non-emergency medical transport (for example 343900000X). The NPI appears on Medicaid enrollment applications, broker credentialing files and every claim.

Why the NPI matters for NEMT

You cannot bill Medicaid or enroll with most brokers without an NPI, and getting one is free and takes a few days, so it is one of the first steps in starting an NEMT business.
