What is commercial auto insurance for NEMT?

Commercial auto insurance covers vehicles used in business, and for NEMT it must be written for passenger-for-hire (livery) use, which personal and standard commercial policies exclude. Policies include liability for injury and property damage, physical damage to the vehicle, uninsured motorist coverage and, importantly, coverage for passengers being loaded and unloaded. Brokers and states usually require a $1 million combined single limit, sometimes $1.5 million, with the broker named as certificate holder.

Why commercial auto insurance matters for NEMT

Insurance is typically the second largest expense in an NEMT business after labor, and it is the first document a broker asks for. Premiums vary widely by state, driver records, vehicle type and claims history, and lapses cause instant trip suspension. Compare quotes annually and read our NEMT insurance explainer and insurance cost calculator.
