What is revenue per vehicle hour?

Revenue per vehicle hour is total billed revenue divided by the hours vehicles were in service, including deadhead and wait time. It captures in one number how well dispatch fills each vehicle's day. Related metrics are revenue per mile, trips per vehicle hour and loaded-mile ratio. A vehicle running two standing-order dialysis routes with multi-loaded riders earns far more per hour than one chasing scattered single trips.

Why revenue per vehicle hour matters for NEMT

Vehicle hours are the constrained resource in NEMT: each one costs a driver's wage and insurance whether or not there is a rider aboard. Tracking revenue per vehicle hour by vehicle and by day exposes weak routes, over-staffing and contracts that do not pay for the time they consume. Benchmarks vary by market; the useful comparison is your own trend and the spread between your best and worst vehicles.
