The operator's publication for non-emergency medical transportation. State licensing guides, broker intel, a 2,000+ provider directory and The Dispatch, our weekly newsletter.
Your drivers are your service, your liability, and the thing brokers grade you on. A single untrained driver can cost you a passenger's safety, a broker contract, and a lawsuit; there are NEMT negligence verdicts in the millions. A real driver safety and training program isn't a one-time orientation; it's hiring the right people, training them on the right things, and documenting all of it. Here's how to build one.
Start with screening and hiring
Safety begins before training. Screen every driver for a clean motor vehicle record, a valid license and any state-required medical card, and a background check appropriate to transporting vulnerable passengers. Brokers audit these credentials, so verify and file them from day one. The cheapest safety investment you'll ever make is not hiring the wrong driver.
Cover the core training areas
Every NEMT driver needs competency in the same fundamentals before they carry a passenger:
- Defensive and safe driving: accident prevention, hazard awareness, and the driving standards brokers measure on their on-time and safety scorecards.
- Passenger assistance and sensitivity: how to help elderly, disabled, and medically fragile passengers with dignity and without injury.
- Wheelchair securement: proper four-point tie-down and occupant restraint; this is where preventable injuries happen.
- ADA and vehicle compliance: accessibility standards and pre-trip vehicle inspections.
Train for emergencies before they happen
NEMT drivers transport people with real medical conditions. Emergency preparedness is non-negotiable: basic first aid and CPR certification, a clear accident-response procedure, and a protocol for medical emergencies en route, when to call 911, how to document, who to notify. Drivers who've rehearsed the response stay calm and make the right call under pressure.
Coach continuously, don't just onboard
Training that stops after week one decays. Set clear performance standards, measure them (on-time rate, safety events, complaints), and coach against them. Driver coaching, regular feedback tied to real metrics and measurable goals, is what turns a trained driver into a consistently safe one and signals to your team that safety is ongoing, not a checkbox.
| Program element | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Screening & hiring | Keeps unsafe drivers out before training cost is spent |
| Core skills training | Defensive driving, passenger assist, securement, ADA |
| Emergency & medical response | First aid/CPR, accident and medical protocols |
| Ongoing coaching | Sustains safety against measured performance |
| Documentation | Proves compliance in broker audits |
Document everything
If it isn't recorded, it didn't happen, at least to a broker auditor or a plaintiff's attorney. Keep signed training acknowledgments, certification dates, coaching notes, and a retraining schedule for every driver. Those records are your proof of a functioning safety program and your first line of defense if something goes wrong.
Your driver safety program checklist
- Screen MVR, license, medical card, and background before hire
- Train defensive driving, passenger assistance, securement, and ADA
- Certify first aid/CPR and rehearse emergency protocols
- Set performance standards and coach against them on a schedule
- Keep signed training and certification records for every driver
Hire carefully, train on what actually keeps passengers safe, coach continuously, and document all of it. That program protects your passengers, your contracts, and your business, in that order.
