What is a wheelchair lift?

A wheelchair lift is a powered platform mounted at a van's side or rear door that lowers to the ground, accepts the wheelchair and rider, and raises them to floor level. Lifts are standard on full-size vans and buses where a ramp would be too steep, and are rated by capacity, commonly 800 pounds for standard lifts and 1,000 pounds or more for bariatric models. ADA specifies platform size, handrails, barriers and control requirements for commercial lifts.

Why lifts matter for NEMT

Lifts are also a maintenance and safety item. They need regular lubrication, hydraulic checks and cycle testing, and a failed lift strands a wheelchair rider mid-trip. Drivers must be trained on manual backup operation. Inspection records for lifts are commonly requested in broker audits and state vehicle inspections, so keep them with the vehicle file.
