What is a wheelchair securement system?

A wheelchair securement system consists of four tie-down straps anchored to floor tracks that hold the wheelchair frame in place, plus a separate lap and shoulder belt for the rider. Systems must meet WC18 (tie-downs) and WC19 (transport-safe wheelchairs) standards; Q'Straint and Sure-Lok are the common manufacturers. Some vans use docking systems for riders who use the same chair every trip.

Why securement matters for NEMT

Improper securement is the leading cause of rider injury in wheelchair transport and a top liability exposure for providers. Every driver who transports wheelchair riders needs documented training in the four-point procedure, correct strap angles, and occupant belt use, with refreshers and spot checks. Brokers and states audit training records. Start with the wheelchair securement training guide.
