EHR integration links a transportation platform to a hospital's or clinic's electronic health record system so that a scheduled appointment, discharge order or dialysis chair time can create a transportation request without a phone call. Integration is done through standards such as HL7 and FHIR or through scheduling platforms that sit between the EHR and the transportation vendor.
Health systems are increasingly buying transportation as a scheduled service rather than a phone-based one, and vendors that can accept electronic orders win the facility contracts. For most independent providers the practical path is software that already connects to the scheduling tools hospitals use, rather than building integrations directly. Our EHR connectivity guide explains the options.
